We have what is termed the spring fishery, which commences in the latter part of March, or the beginning of April, in which they are away for the space of seven or eight weeks before they go to sea to the northward; and we have the fall fishery, which is for about the same space of time, and does not close till near Christmas [...].

THE FALL FISHERY. -- The fall fishery continues good at Pouch Cove, Bay de Verde and other settlements along the east coast, and "civil" weather is all that is required to secure from one to three quintals of large fish every day.

The chief objection to allowing fall seasons is the tendency for packers to include, along with hard-shelled lobsters, others which have only recently moulted, and are in consequence soft, watery and unfit for canning. [...] The Newfoundland fishery inspectors and most of the packers themselves are against having a fall fishery, since some soft lobsters invariably occur to some extent.

The shore fisherman are having fair results with the fall fishery, although it is not as good as it was last season. However, on some days some dories land a quintal or more.

Figures will be released later this week on the results of the month of August in the Fall fishery off Newfoundland. The picture generally looks good over last year, although in some parts it will prove lower than the catch of 1959.

One informant suggests that the duration of the fall fishery is directly related to the frequency of occurrence of onshore and offshore winds which tend to intervene between periods of "northerly" winds to return the fish to the grounds. He feels that if these winds were the only ones to occur in Petty Harbour, the fish would remain on the grounds and the fishermen could fish all winter.

More important is the Fall fishery, in which the men use jiggers and trawls from July through September. [...] The Fall fishery off Mistaken Point could be extended if the Point had a fog horn, which would allow the men to get out there and back when the weather is dirty.
2001
Federal Fisheries Minister Herb Dhaliwal says he hopes winter will provide the time to hammer out a lasting, peaceful agreement with the Burnt Church First Nation. The native fishermen, who had been granted a special fall fishery within a prescribed zone inside Miramichi Bay, pulled out about 600 traps as their licence expired Saturday, leaving Fisheries officers to clear out the remaining traps.
2015
The first round of the recreational cod fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador begins Saturday. Also known as the food fishery, the summer season runs until Aug. 9. The fall fishery is set to begin on Sept. 19 and run until Sept. 27.
